As such, Vader used an interrogation droid to try and extract the information, but Leia was able to resist. Tarkin, however, found another form of persuasion: he would threaten to destroy her home planet of Alderaan unless she divulged the whereabouts of the base. The Princess protested, but Tarkin and Vader would not listen. Alderaan was destroyed. But the Rebels still had time -- the Dantooine base had been abandoned long ago, which Leia knew, and the Alliance really resided on Yavin 4.
Taking off his helmet, Luke introduced himself and the two quickly left. But by this time, stormtroopers had found the ragtag group, and Han, Chewie, Luke, and Leia were forced to jump into a trash compactor to hide. Han and Leia immediately clashed, with the Princess having little patience for his bravado.
When the walls of the compactor began to close in, all seemed lost until R2-D2 was able to remotely shut them down. They escaped, but little did they know that Vader had placed a tracking device on their ship. Leia and her rescuers rendezvoused with the Alliance on Yavin 4, where she delivered the Death Star plans. As the Rebels prepped their attack on the space station, Han and Chewie collected their reward for saving the Princess and were readying to leave.
Meanwhile, having successfully tracked the Falcon to Yavin 4, the Death Star closed in. The attack began, with Luke piloting an X-wing , Leia monitoring in the command center, and Han long gone.
Han, Chewie, and Luke returned to the base where Leia warmly greeted them, and later presented them medals for their bravery.
Leia remained a key figure in the fight for freedom, and her feelings for Han had developed -- though he could still drive her crazy. Leia, Han, Chewbacca, and C-3PO evaded the Empire by heading into an asteroid field -- a dangerous move that only the daring captain of the Millennium Falcon would attempt. It worked, and Han docked his ship inside a cave within one of the larger rock masses.
Upon arrival, Leia was skeptical of Lando -- he seemed a little too friendly. Her misgivings would prove true, as Lando handed his new guests over to Darth Vader and Boba Fett , claiming they arrived just before the Falcon.
Han was tortured by Vader and Leia was held prisoner, all part of a trap to lure Luke Skywalker. The Sith Lord planned to carbon-freeze Luke, but would test the dangerous procedure on Han. As an adult she fights fearlessly against the Empire and later the First Order, always with the hope of restoring peace to the galaxy.
As well as being a strong leader, Leia also forms close bonds with her friends — most importantly her twin brother Luke Skywalker. After reluctantly falling for the charms of scoundrel Han Solo, the pair marry and have a son; Ben Solo who later turns to the dark side, just like his grandfather before him.
Leia is convinced that the squabbling within the ranks of the Senate has rendered the government powerless against a First Order attack.
The Force Awakens proves just how right Leia is. The Star Wars saga went through many iterations, as many creative works do. A later version of the story turned her into Leia Antilles, daughter of Bail Antilles, and she hailed from the planet Organa Major. This is one of many cases where Lucas took inspiration from other cultures, removing certain aesthetics and styles from context to create a look for the movie that would surprise American audiences.
Sound familiar? The non-canon Infinities comics, published in the early s, featured some of the most creative storytelling in the franchise. One story asked what would happen if the saga were derailed in a significant way. Leia wields a purple lightsaber and, like Luke, learns that Vader is her father. The comic ends on a positive note, implying Leia will help lead the Rebellion to victory.
As a general, Leia offered guidance both militarily and personally. She became an important confidant for scavenger Rey and a cherished advisor to Resistance fighters like pilot Poe Dameron. The Last Jedi. While Leia was just as strong with the Force as her brother Luke, she never became a Jedi. Still, she did begin her training. Shortly after the Battle of Endor, the twins began training together, with Luke guiding Leia through meditative practices and sparring exercises.
Though she had the aptitude, Leia preferred to serve the cause and hone her skills with the Force in other ways. She eventually stopped training with Luke and forewent future Jedi-related endeavors. Before Leia quit her training, she did build her own lightsaber. As seen in Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker , it had a fairly simple bronze hilt decorated with circular silver hoops toward the blade, which was blue.
After telling Luke she would no longer train as Jedi, she handed over her lightsaber, asking him to keep it for a future apprentice. Years later, Luke would give Leia's lightsaber to Rey. In line with her ideals and the entirety of her life's work, Leia makes the ultimate sacrifice in attempting to reach out to her son, Ben, stopping him before he delivers a final blow to Rey as they duel on Kef Bir.
Still bearing physical trauma from her time in space's vacuum after the First Order's attack on the Raddus, Leia had been actively resisting against the call of death, feeling as if her presence was a necessary one for the Resistance to succeed. When she senses the danger that Rey is in and the turmoil brewing within her son, however, Leia knows that only she has the capacity to both redeem Ben and save the Resistance's last hope.
Summoning all her strength, Leia reaches out to Kylo in the Force and calls him by his birth name. As his mother dies from the exhaustion of that final exertion, Kylo drops his lightsaber, allowing Rey to strike him with her own. Shortly after, while feeling the loss of Leia, Rey heals his mortal wounds—but Kylo Ren is already dead.
Coupled with the memory of his father, Han, Leia's powerful sacrifice brings Ben back to the Light Side of the Force, ultimately securing his redemption. The on-screen loss of Leia Organa also felt remarkably personal.
Upon release, the film was dedicated to "Our Princess, Carrie Fisher. Adding a poignant note, Billie Lourd, Fisher's own daughter, acted as a body double for Leia in the film's Jedi training flashback scene. They're not meaningless, but that's where we have to start.
